About the Province

The world is much bigger than
our eyes can see!

PEI is one of Canada's maritime provinces located on the east coast of the country between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. At 280 kilometers long, Prince Edward Island (PEI) is Canada's smallest province, both in area and population (just over 156,000 people), but it is the most densely populated.

The main island is 5,620 square kilometers in area, is the 104th largest island in the world and the 23rd largest island in Canada. Its capital is Charlottetown and its economic base is agriculture, fishing and tourism. Other industries are also considered important such as aerospace, bioscience, information technology and renewable energy.

The climate on the island is moderate and milder, influenced by the tides and the warm waters of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Weather conditions are the most variable in everyday life in Canada and that is why weather conditions rarely last long. The maximum average is 23ºC and the minimum average, during the day, is -3.3ºC. What's up? Could this province be a home for you?

Labor Market

The Prince Edward Island labor market has been resilient with its workforce and employment rate reaching record levels in recent months

Despite both indicators having declined in January 2022, by 1.4% and 3.5%, respectively, they remain considerably higher compared to the previous year. A total of 47,500 people were not in the island's workforce as of January 2022, which is nearly 12% higher than it was in February 2020, just before the pandemic. This means that there are still around 5,000 people left who had some kind of ties in the job market before the pandemic, but remain uncommitted or are not looking for a job, showing an opportunity for immigrants.

The construction industry did relatively well and job vacancies in the last month continue to come from strong activity in this segment. Applications for residential construction permits increased by 28% in 2021 and the number of new homes in 2022 is 42% higher than in 2021. Ilha's employment base totaled 80,600 vacancies in January 2022, and is slightly down from the previous month. The impact of the recent pandemic restrictions was felt across the market.

Tourism (as well as fishing and agriculture) is one of the province's strong points, but not only because of its natural beauty, the rural climate of vast agricultural fields (such as potato plantations) and the reddish sands of some beaches.
