Considered part of central Canada, Quebec is the largest province in Canada by area with 1,668 million km². The official language of Quebec is French and it is the only Canadian province where French is the 1st language for the majority of the population (78%). Anglophone (English speaking) communities and institutions are concentrated west of the island of Montreal.

Quebec has an estimated population of over 8 million which makes it the second most populous province in the country, accounting for 24% of Canada's total population. Most inhabitants live in urban areas between Montreal and Quebec City (Capital). In large cities, the climate is humid continental, with 4 well-defined seasons, with long, cold and snowy winters. Summers are shorter, hotter and generally humid. From south to north, average temperatures range in summer between 25 and 5 °C and in winter between –10 and –25 °C.

The province's natural resources are the basis of its economy, but other sectorsalso play important roles such as aerospace, information and communication technologies, biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry. All of these industries contributed to helping Quebec become an economically influential province within Canada, second only to Ontario.
