Brazil has always been influenced by American films, music and sports. It is common to have friends, family and acquaintances who visit Walt Disney theme parks or take pictures at Central Park. Many Brazilians even go a step further, to study or sometimes even stay indefinitely in Uncle Sam’s lands. However, due to the very restricted immigration policy not everyone is able to obtain the coveted “green card” which gives them the right to reside in the country.
The United States has recently suspended new permanent and temporary visas for U.S. residents for the rest of 2020 due to the pandemic. This may be a sign that the American immigration policy may become even more strict in the years to come.
In contrast, Canada offers more than 80 immigration programs and is widely known for welcoming immigrants. Would Canada then be the new owner of the “American Dream”?
In a TV interview Canadian Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino said Canada remains open to immigrants after the coronavirus pandemic. Although Canada’s economy was also impacted by the pandemic, Mendicino and the Canadian government believe that continuing to receive immigrants will help with the nation’s economic recovery.
Society is aware that Canada’s economy was affected by the pandemic because the country made the decision to put public safety first. However, everyone knows that Canada has a stable economy and will soon return to low levels of unemployment and immigration will again be the key to the country’s economic development.
It’s important to highlight that Canada continues to receive new immigrants through Express Entry, provincial nominee programs (PNP) and other immigration streams, even during the Covid-19 pandemic.
